Taking an online art tutorial – steps to take
My abstract painting tutorials are guided and self-paced so you can start, stop and finish whenever you like.
However, I have a few tips to make the process easier, in case this is new to you. Do these things first and you’ll find it easier to create a final artwork that you are proud to hang on your wall.
PREVIEW THE TUTORIAL
#1 – Watch the tutorial all the way through before you even start. Believe me, there will be spots you’ll want to rewind and watch again and if you do it at least one time before you start, you’ll be more confident during the process.
START SMALL – EXPERIMENT
#2 – Decide if you want to create a “sample” work on a smaller canvas to get used to the techniques, colors and mediums. THIS IS STRONGLY SUGGESTED!
Taking the tutorial all the way through and working on a small canvas or art board will help you when you get to your larger (pricier) canvas. If you run into problems, it’s a lot easier to fix in a smaller format.
If you decide you don’t like it or want to have different colors, you can easily make the change before you get to your large-scale format.
Again, it is strongly suggested you start like this unless you are somewhat skilled and confident you can create it as you like it in the first go around.
ASSEMBLE YOUR MATERIALS
#3 – Assemble all colors, mediums and materials prior to starting. You will so much happier if you have everything vs. having to place a “rush” amazon order and waiting a few days to get back to it.
MEASURE YOUR SPACE FOR FINAL ARTWORK
#4 – Be sure to measure your space and know exactly what size canvas you want to have as your final artwork. Thinking a 24″ x 30″ would work, but realizing afterward that a 30″ x 40″ (or conversely, a 16″ x 20″) would have been better is disappointing.
You put all the time, energy and effort (not to mention money/resources) into your art, so take the time before you start to be prepared!
HELP!
As always, with my tutorials, if you run into a spot you just cannot figure out, just email me. I am happy to walk you through it via email or even take a look at your painting to see where I may help trouble-shoot!
Happy painting!
